The Leonard Mill

new life for a historic treasue

Integrated Life is proud to be a part of this ambitious project to breathe new life into the historic Leonard Mill in downtown Leonard, Michigan. The project is a unique private-public partnership with support from The Integrated Life Company, The Village of Leonard, Oakland County, and several other organizations.

It is our belief that there is a unique and fitting symmetry to this project. Mills such as this were established as a center of commerce, community, and entrepreneurship. Bringing a cross section of different people, with different purpsoses, together in one place.

Similarly, our vision sees the Leonard Mill reimagined as a community third place, a center for small business incubation, events, arts, music, education, and much more.

Imagine a place where you can stroll a makers market, enjoy a cup of locally roasted coffee, browse a selection of  baked breads and baked goods, take part in a yoga class or a guided hike, attend an evening of dinner and music, and so much more.

The Leonard Mill will serve it's intended purpose - a place where people come together to build a better way of work for a better way of life.

Thank you for your interest in the project. Please email us at leonardmill@integratedlifeco.com with any questions about the project!

A Brief History

The History of the Leonard Mill

The Leonard Mill, sometimes called the Leonard Grain Elevator and Beanery, was built in 1889 alongside the Pontiac, Oxford & Northern Railroad. From its earliest days, it stood as the beating heart of commerce and entrepreneurship in Leonard, Michigan. Farmers brought grain, beans, livestock, and lumber to the mill, where products were processed and shipped out on the rail line to larger markets.

This towering wood-frame grain elevator quickly became a center of agricultural trade and a lifeline for small-town businesses. Its presence attracted new families, workers, and shopkeepers to the area, helping transform Leonard from a rural outpost into a bustling community. For nearly a century, the Leonard Mill was the economic engine of the village—an enduring landmark of Michigan’s farming heritage and entrepreneurial spirit.

By the 1980s, shifts in agriculture led to the mill’s transition into a local dry goods store, which kept the historic structure alive until it closed in 2005. Recognizing the building’s importance, the Village of Leonard acquired the mill in 2014 to ensure its preservation for future generations.

Over the past twenty years, a variety of restoration projects have stabilized and protected the building, preserving it as the only surviving historic mill along the Polly Ann Trail in Oakland County. Today, the Leonard Mill remains a symbol of resilience, history, and the entrepreneurial foundation of Leonard, Michigan.
